Gun Dog Trainer Jon BoultonJon

Although I specialise in training gun dogs I also offer training for pet dogs and puppies. I set the bar high, finding ways of achieving a high standard of obedience without losing the dogs trust or breaking their spirit.

Experience is learning from our mistakes. Wisdom is learning from the experience of others. I have over 40 years experience in dog training.

I had my first dog, a show Cocker Spaniel, Jessie, as a chid. It was a condition laid down by Mother that I read up on dog training! ‘The Choice and Training of the Family Dog’ by John Holmes quickly became my favourite homework!

At ten years old I had no experience or ego to guide me, so I did what it said in the book.It worked, and that initial success got me hooked on dog training. The purchase of my first English Springer Spaniel led me to training classes and professional handlers.

While working as Gamekeeper I needed well behaved dogs on the shoot. This led to me showing others how to train their dogs. This was a springboard to really gaining knowledge and confidence.

I have been around dogs all my life, both as family pets and working dogs.

I owned my first dog at the age of 22, a black Labrador called Bella, after her came Dice an English springer spaniel cross Jack Russell. It was Dice that was my springboard into the world of dog training, behaviour and psychology, she was not easy!

I asked Jon if I could come and watch one of his advanced training classes. When I turned up Jon handed me a customer’s dog along with the following instructions, no eye contact, touching or talking to this dog, I was to do everything Jon told me. These instructions went against everything I had ever felt towards dogs, and to be honest I thought he was completely wrong, however, I done exactly what Jon said, and this dog done it. Jon explained to me why he had asked me not to make any contact initially with the dog, and why carrying out those instructions were so important, that was it I was hooked.

Since that day I have been at every training class, as well as some of Jon’s 1-1 sessions. I have now been assisting Jon for around 8 years as well as studying and reading books on this, now my favourite subject.

In January 2018 I began studying with The Cambridge Institute of Dog Behaviour & Training. At the end of May 2020 I gained a higher certification in Dog behaviour & Psychology.
